Trochilidae Day set 1
Scientists love to label ordinary things in nature with crazy complicated names. I use this to full advantage when naming paintings. The Trochilidae is a tiny, temperamental bird commonly seen near red flowers in North America. The make for wonderful subjects in paintings and photographs, if you have your camera set on a lightning-fast shutter speed. You may be familiar with these wild little creatures. Normal folks call them hummingbirds.
I was first introduced to the title Trochilidae when brainstorming up a name for this here painting. Trochilidae Triumvirate. Three hummingbirds flutter around large orange and pink flowers. You see three kinds of birds here. Our personal favorite round the Smith house and the bane of all other hummingbirds' existences, the Rufus, in the top left corner. In the bottom left corner flutters my feeble attempt of a ruby-throated hummingbird. They are such beautiful birds, and I just cannot do them justice. The center dude is a unique figment of my imagination. I would like to think there is a solid blue hummingbird out there somewhere, but I honestly have never looked it up to see if there is or not. This painting is now in the personal collection of my highly esteemed grandma, Dora.
Night Flyer is one of my earliest oil paintings. No oil painting pre-dating this one ever get to see the public eye. Some people say I made the hummingbird disproportionately large. I say the size is fine, but the color and wing style is all wrong. Otherwise, I love this painting, and I am very proud of it. Maybe I will try a reproduction one day with better proportions and color as well as more accurate lines.
Jungle Flyer. This painting is available for sale in the SPACe gallery. I like green. Daddy calls it monochromatic syndrome. So, I added red flowers to this one for a nice pop of color. Would go real nice in a hippie house. It certainly is crazy enough with the prominent brush strokes.
Oil painting on wood creates a unique, earthy effect in artwork. My grandma also snagged this piece. Do you have any idea what this little guy wants to be named? Email me your suggestions! paint@artistkyleenicole.com
Guess what!
This post also includes a photo I took of a pair of hummingbirds visiting us. Yes, I did have it on a fast shutter speed. Look at the header to find it!
